When can a driver use high beams?

A driver is permitted to use high beams when driving in rural areas with no oncoming traffic because high beams provide greater visibility by illuminating a larger area and can penetrate further down the road compared to low beams. This is particularly advantageous in less populated areas where other vehicles are sparse, and there is minimal risk of blinding other drivers.

Using high beams in foggy conditions can actually reduce visibility, as the light reflects off the fog and can create a glare that impairs the driver’s ability to see. Similarly, while highways might seem like an appropriate place to use high beams, drivers must still consider the presence of other vehicles. Lastly, high beams should not be used only during the daytime as their primary purpose is to enhance night visibility, making them most useful during nighttime or in low-light situations.
